Family Roots Farm
Our Story
Our Story
Our farm is a labor of love. Located in Hinckley, the farm was officially purchased in 2014 from our late Grandfather, Duane Root, to keep it in the family. Thus making us the 5th generation farming this land. We had already been farming it previous to his passing, and we wanted him to take comfort in knowing we were going to expand it in the future, and try and restore it's historical value, and ecological practices. Family Roots Farm is nationally classified as an "Organic Plus" farm. We use Vedic and Biodynamic farming methods and skillfully use permaculture-design and agroforestry, to create an optimal landscape for a farm operation that is completely sustainable, nurturing, and all-natural. We are also farm educators, and will always make ourselves available to assist a peer farmer.
In addition to our beloved-garlic we grow a boutique selection of heirloom produce for our non-gmo/organic products. Our jellies, pies, kosher dill pickles, pickled green beans, garlic, scapes, garlic butter, hot cauliflower, salsa, and our newest recipe-bread and butter pickles, are too die for! Our large Italian bee hives produce some of the most flavorful and floral buckwheat honey in the Fall. Grade A Medium and Dark Robust Maple syrup is also produced in the late-Winter.
Our garlic!
The garlic we have planted includes the Hardneck varieties: Romanian Red, Music, Shvelisi/Turkish, German White, Roots Buckeye Red, Georgian Crystal and Georgian Fire and the Softneck varieties: Nootka Rose, Inchelium Red, Lorz Italian, S&H, and Silver White. We will also sell the ramps and garlic scapes that we cut off of the hardneck varieties in the early Summer. These are a special order due to the short harvesting window.
Silverskin garlic braids will be available upon request in August. All garlic varieties ship in the Early Fall. Ordering page is under "Web Store" of your convenience. All Garlic is CERTIFIED ORGANIC SEED QUALITY and is sought-after for it's food enhancement purposes for the discerning pallet. We are on track to harvest over 2 tons of organic garlic again this year!
We have a trademarked hybrid hardneck rocambole garlic (which are known for their complex favor) that is a wild crop thought only to be in one area of the Pacific Northwest for an estimated century or so. We have found that it also grows wild in NE Ohio. We have chosen to name it "Roots Buckeye Red" after our farm. It's one of the most robust and earthy garlics we have tasted. Truly a one of a kind flavor profile. This is our top selling garlic! We sell this seed in 1/2 pound increments only at this time, and it sells out fast!
For your convenience, we do take orders over the phone at 330-329-2880, via our FaceBook (Family Roots Farm Inc) page and Facebook store. You will also find our farm stand at every Saturday at The Farmer's Market of Medina County at Cornerstone Chapel Church on Granger Road. It is 2 miles from our farm from 9am-12pm. We will be opening up the farm on weekends in August and September for garlic and products of garlic. We will continue to sell our very popular holiday garlic bouquets, culinary garlic, buckwheat honey and grade A maple syrup through the rest of the year by appointment.
We will continue our charitable services and local sponsorships of Police Associations and events like Shop with a Cop and Badges and Bag Pipes. We are an annual sponsor of the Face Plant for Medina County, typically benefiting the DD community. We enjoy sponsoring youth sports associations and clubs with Highland and Brunswick School District as well. We are always looking for other ways to help in our local community. We love holding private, school or community farm tours. Reach out to us directly if there is an organization that could use our assistance, or would like to schedule a tour. We offer farm classes on-site for all things agriculture. Look for our event calendar to be posted soon. Classes start in July. Always available for group garlic tastings/pairings, farm consulting services, (your farm or ours), or for Certified Naturally Grown Inspections.
